Roadworks warning as work on second half of North Tyneside's coastal cycle route to begin

Work will take place on the "Seafront Sustainable Travel Route" - with motorists warned to expect a one-way system and temporary traffic lights

Construction of the second phase of a cycle route at the North Tyneside coast will begin later this month.

After the first section of the route was opened earlier this year, work to build the second phase - which will see it extended from Cullercoats to Whitley Bay's St Mary's Lighthouse - is now set to begin. With the construction will come temporary traffic lights in some areas along the coast, along with a one-way route which will be put in place around Cullercoats.

The end result is, North Tyneside Council has said, to be a "five-mile coastal pathway". This will have safe areas for cyclists and pedestrians and resurfaced roads and footpaths.

The scheme has been funded by the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund and charity Sustrans. North Tyneside Council said the first section of the path had "already made journeys safer and more enjoyable for thousands of residents and visitors".

North Tyneside's deputy mayor Councillor Carl Johnson (Lab), said: "We’re excited to begin this next transformative phase of the Seafront Sustainable Travel Route. By improving our footpaths and roads, we’re creating a more welcoming, accessible, and enjoyable seafront for everyone—whether you’re walking, wheeling, cycling, or driving.

"The seafront belongs to us all, and this project isn’t just about infrastructure. It’s about building a better connected, more vibrant community, while making North Tyneside greener and healthier."

The councillor said that while the roadworks may cause disruption, the scheme would bring long-term benefits. He added: "We know there may be some temporary disruption during construction, but the long-term benefits will be worth it. I’d like to thank everyone in advance for their patience as we work to improve our coastline for everyone to enjoy."

The temporary traffic measures will include a one-way system and temporary traffic lights, starting from October 14.

The specific measures are:

  • Tynemouth Aquarium to Marden Avenue, Cullercoats: A temporary northbound one-way system will be in place. Southbound road users will be diverted via Mast Lane – Broadway – Beach Road.
  • Spanish City to St Mary’s Lighthouse, Whitley Bay: Most of the work will occur on the footpath, with pedestrian diversions. Temporary traffic lights will be in place at times when work occurs on the carriageway.
  • All diversions will be clearly signposted along alternate routes (the A193), with residents’ access maintained throughout.

There will also be site compounds at locations away from residential areas - at the car park behind Tynemouth Aquarium, at a section of the grassy area next to the aquarium, on a section of the Links, and at the Briardene car park.
