Morrisons giving away 'free carrots for Rudolph' just in time for Christmas
by Levi Winchester · ChronicleLiveMorrisons has announced it's bringing back its popular festive giveaway, offering free carrots to help children "prepare for Santa and Rudolph". Eager supermarket goers can scoop up free 'wonky' carrots - veggies that come oversized or oddly shaped - on December 21 and December 22.
Sales of carrots at Morrisons soar in the week leading up to Christmas, more than doubling compared to the week before. The complimentary carrots will be conveniently located in stands at the entrance of stores for customers to grab without any obligation to purchase additional items.
It's a nod to the traditional Christmas Eve ritual where kids leave out a mince pie and glass of milk for Santa, along with carrots for Rudolph and his reindeer buddies. But beyond fostering festive spirit, the supermarket's initiative also aims to tackle food waste.
Morrisons also recently launched their £16.50 Christmas dinner and we went to try it out.
Andy Todd, Carrot Buyer at Morrisons, commented: "Thousands of families across the nation will excitedly be preparing for Father Christmas's visit soon and we wanted to play our part in helping to ensure he and his team are well fed. Our tasty wonky range helps our British farmers reduce waste and offers customers a delicious alternative at a fraction of the cost."
Supermarkets have begun their price war for the most affordable Christmas dinner. Aldi has introduced a budget-friendly Christmas meal for six people, costing £11.45, or £1.91 per person, reports the Mirror.
This includes a Small Fresh British Turkey priced at £8.85, or 2.95 per kg, and vegetables such as Nature's Pick Potatoes, Brussels Sprouts, Carrots and Parsnips, all priced at 15p each. The meal also includes Quixo Sage and Onion Stuffing Mix at 45p for 170g, Quixo Gravy Granules priced at £1.09 for 300g, and a 15-pack of Everyday Essentials Yorkshire Puddings for 46p.
Other supermarkets are also reducing the cost of some popular festive vegetables to just 15p. Sainsbury's was the first to announce that Nectar Card customers can purchase cheap Christmas vegetables from December 18 to Christmas Eve.
Items on offer include a 2kg bag of Sainsbury's White Potatoes, reduced for Nectar customers to 15p from £1.35, and 500g of British Parsnips, down from 75p also to 15p. Tesco then announced it was cutting the price of a traditional Christmas Dinner for Clubcard members.
From December 19, they will be able to serve six people on Christmas Day for just £1.84 per person.
The supermarket is slashing the price of small, fresh turkeys by 40% - to just £3 a kilo with a Clubcard. It's also cutting the price of carrots and parsnips to a mere 15p a bag, and reducing sage and onion stuffing to just 40p for Clubcard holders - meaning a dinner for six will cost just £11.05.
Lidl and Asda have also revealed they'll be offering vegetables such as sprouts, broccoli, carrots and parsnips for 15p from December 19.
Supermarkets will have varying opening times over the Christmas and New Year period, we've rounded up all the changes you need to know about it.
