What we know so far on serious A1 crash in Northumberland as road closed in both directions
by Owen Younger · ChronicleLiveA serious crash on the A1 in Northumberland has caused the road to be closed in both directions. The four-vehicle collision took place between the A1068 at Alnwick and the A697 at Morpeth.
Emergency services are at the scene, on the southbound side of the A1, close to the turn-off for Shilbottle, and motorists are being asked to use alternative routes when possible. Despite the Great North Air Ambulance being called out, one person was taken to the RVI hospital by road.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 7.45am today (Tuesday), we received a report of a four-vehicle collision on the southbound side of the A1 at Alnwick, close to the turn-off for Shilbottle.
"Emergency services are in attendance, and a section of the road is currently closed between the A697 and the A1068 and a diversion is in place. Motorists should use alternative routes where possible."
National Highways North East posted this on X: "The A1 in Northumberland remains closed in both directions between the A697 (Northgate) and the A1068 (Alnwick) due to a multi-vehicle collision.
"The closure is expected to be in place throughout the morning."
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic incident on Tuesday 17 December on the A1 near Morpeth at 7:46am. We dispatched one ambulance crew, one clinical team leader, one specialist paramedic, one HART crew (Hazardous Area Response Team) and were supported by our colleagues at Great North Air Ambulance Service.
"One patient was taken to the RVI hospital by road."
