Ireland weather: Freezing temperatures of -3 confirmed as 'cold snap' returns following Storm Bert

Storm Bert brought rain, wind and flooding across the country over the weekend, but things will become a lot colder over the next few days.
Temperatures will drop to a low of -3 degrees in some areas overnight, beginning on Monday.

The change in weather will bring bitterly cold conditions in a new "cold snap" just two weeks after temperatures plummeted around Ireland.
Today will see some further rain and the last of Storm Bert leaves the island. There will be strong to near gale and gusty southwesterly winds, windiest in the west and northwest with heavy rain in the west, according to Met.ie.
Met Eireann has forecast highest afternoon temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with highs of 7 degrees overnight.
Monday night
Showers will become increasingly confined to western and northern coastal counties on Monday night with long clear spells developing elsewhere. Frost and some icy patches will develop as temperatures fall to between -2 to +2 degrees in light to moderate southwest or variable breezes. Patches of mist and fog will also develop.
Tuesday
Dry and sunny for most. However, a few showers will continue to affect northern and Atlantic coasts. Cloud will build near the south coast in the afternoon with a chance of some light rain and drizzle developing towards evening. Highest temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees in light variable breezes. Apart from a few coastal showers in the west and northwest and the possibility of patchy rain and drizzle in the southeast, most other places will be dry with frost and fog developing in many areas on Tuesday night. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees in light northerly or variable breezes.
Wednesday
Areas of mist and fog could be slow to clear through Wednesday morning and may linger all day in a few spots. Otherwise it will be a largely dry day with good spells of sunshine and with just isolated showers near eastern and northern coasts. Chilly, with afternoon highs of 3 to 7 degrees in light northerly or variable breezes. Mist and fog patches will set in through the evening and early night. Wednesday night will be another dry and cold night with frost and icy patches developing. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +1 degrees with light winds becoming easterly and freshening in the southwest towards morning.
