Storm Bert chaos as tree engulfs listed Exeter building

by · DevonLive

Dramatic photos capture the moment a tree crashed into a listed building on a major route through Exeter.

Cowick Street in the heart of the city was sealed off with cones and barriers after a giant tree toppled in ferocious winds and horrendous rainfall.

The closure was in the vicinity of The Sawyers Arms, although it is not known whether the prominent Wetherspoon pub was affected. A Spoons spokesperson has been approached for comment.

The tree, situated in a walled garden next to an old vicarage, landed on the chimney stack of a historic property before engineers and fire crews worked to resolve the incident.

The closure was in place on Sunday morning with the road being re-opened around 1.10pm according to locals.

Pictures below show the tree dangling against the building as Storm Bert wreaked havoc in Exeter. Savage weather continues to cause problems across Devon this afternoon.
