One of Bristol’s best known architectural landmarks, Foster’s Almshouses is a Burgundian Gothic Revival style group of buildings at the top of Christmas Steps in Bristol city centre. This is an excellent location with the Bristol Beacon, 02, Bristol Hippodrome, harbourside, and BRI all in close proximity. This first floor apartment has dual aspect looking over Christmas Steps and the communal gardens.
According to the Foster’s Almshouses website, the almshouses and the Chapel of the Three Kings of Cologne, are Grade II* listed buildings and historical landmarks with a rich 500-year history. “The almshouses, known today as the Three Kings Court, were founded by the wealthy merchant John Foster in 1483 to house and care for the elderly poor. They underwent several rebuilds over a 400-year period until being taken over by the Bristol Municipal Charities organisation in 1835.
“They commissioned renowned Bristol architects, Foster & Wood, who rebuilt the almshouses in the exuberant Burgundian Gothic Revival style. The rebuild of the almshouses and reface of the Chapel of the Three Kings took place in phases over 20 years, from 1861 to 1883.” In 2007, the building was sold to a developer and turned into private apartments.
