Despite the UK becoming increasingly secular, it's estimated that a third of Brits believe in ghosts. Many individuals, who previously held no belief in the afterlife, claim to have witnessed unexplainable phenomena.

Nottingham is well-known for its ghost stories, with numerous locations across the city reputed to be hotspots for supernatural activity. Here, we delve into a handful of those places.

The National Justice Museum (formerly known as the Galleries of Justice) is considered one of the most haunted sites in the country.

Its dark past has led many to believe that tormented spirits still roam its halls. The building functioned as a court from 1375 and was converted into a prison in 1449.

It was the only place in Britain where an individual could be tried, convicted, sentenced, and even executed at the entrance. Over time, numerous visitors have reported hearing screams, knocks, and slamming doors.

Wollaton Hall, an Elizabethan mansion located in the heart of Nottingham, is believed to be haunted by Lady Middleton. After being paralysed due to a fall, she is said to now wander the rear of the building and Room 19 in particular.

Perched on a cliff overlooking the River Trent, the 52-room Grade I listed mansion Clifton Hall was originally home to the Clifton family in the 13th century. It's believed to have been built for defensive purposes.

Businessman Anwar Rashid purchased the hall in 2006 but relinquished it after eight months due to paranormal activities. Mr Rashid and his wife reported hearing knocks on the wall, and bloodspots were discovered on their 18-month-old baby's quilt.

Nottingham Castle is another location with a spooky history. Roger Mortimer, who was imprisoned in the castle before being dragged to his execution in 1330, is said to be heard pacing around his former cell.

His lover, Queen Isabella, has been reported screaming. Visitors should be wary of spotting the Countess of Nottingham, as she reportedly only appears to those who will die within a year.

Ye Olde Salutation Inn also has its share of ghostly tales. A former landlord, unable to cope with the stress of running the pub, took his own life and is now believed to haunt the inn.

The caves beneath the pub are said to be haunted by a four-year-old child. Additionally, the ghost of a highwayman is thought to make occasional appearances.

Trent Bridge is another site known for its spectral sightings. The alleged ghost of someone who died by suicide can be seen peering over the edge of the bridge before disappearing.

Some have reported seeing figures jump into the water from the bridge, only to vanish before hitting the water. A transparent jogger has also been sighted running across the bridge.

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, one of the oldest pubs in England, is also reputed to be haunted. Constructed in 1189, this inn, believed to be the oldest pub in England, is known for its ghostly voices and unexplained noises. A model galleon covered in dust hangs from the ceiling of the Rock Lounge, and it's said that the last three people who attempted to clean it died under mysterious circumstances.

Mapperley Hospital, a former hospital which shut down in 1994 and is now occupied by Nottingham Healthcare NHS Trust, has been the site of some spooky happenings. Employees have reported hearing their names called out by an invisible entity and sightings of a ghostly woman roaming the corridors.

The toilets at the British Transport Police Station are rumoured to be haunted. In 1977, an officer working alone at night heard a door slam shut.

Upon checking, he discovered a trail of wet footprints leading to the toilets, but the room was empty. Fast forward thirty years, another officer reported seeing a man enter the toilets, but upon following him, found the room deserted.

The City of Caves, which were used as bomb shelters during World War II, have been the source of some eerie reports. Some visitors claim to have heard the sounds of explosions overhead, while others report sightings of a distressed woman in Victorian attire darting around the caves.
