Huge blaze at New York skyscraper as massive smoke cloud seen across city

A huge blaze has torn through a skyscraper roof in Manhattan, New York, with plumes of smoke being seen above the city.

The flames was seen consuming a roof at the at the luxury The Set block of flats in the Hudson Yards area today. Firefighters rushed to 10th Avenue and West 35th Street after the fire started shortly before 12pm local time, the Mirror reports.

Many people took to social media to share photos and videos of the the fire. X/Twitter user @juanpitz said: "What is going on in Hudson Yards?" New York-based reporter Jade Nash said: "A building in Hudson Yards is burning right now. Took these images from my bedroom and called 911. Prayers." User @JohnBasham posted: "A large fire has erupted from the roof of a midtown Manhattan skyscraper filling the skies over New York City with thick smoke."

Thick black smoke plumes were seen rising from the structure in both photos and videos. Other pictures showed the smoke moving through the city, with many from several miles away being able to see the blaze.

According to reports, the blaze prompted over 80 firemen from the New York Fire Department (NYFD) to respond. It is believed that they managed to control it. Local news sources say there have been no reports of fatalities or injuries as of yet. The NYFD has been approached by The Mirror for comment.

According to the rental website Related, The Set "blurs the line between a five-star hotel and luxury residential experience." Rental studios at The Set go for $5,000 (£3,932).

The Set's rooftop terrace has a dining area, lounge, and swimming pool. Hudson Yards is renowned for housing some of Manhattan's priciest real estate, with rents sometimes reaching several thousand dollars a month.
