Smoke is rising again from the east side of Spion Kop in Lake Country.

Thanks to the cool, wet weather, the BC Wildfire Service has resumed wildfire fuel mitigation work between Highway 97 and The Lakes neighbourhood.

The work is a collaboration between BCWS and the District of Lake Country and continues where crews left off earlier this year. The seven hectare project is part of a long-term plan to create a landscape-level fuel break for the community.

BCWS expects to be on the site through November. The exact timing of the burns will depend on the weather, venting and snow conditions.

Smoke will likely be visible from nearby homes and from the highway. Residents are asked not to call the Lake Country Fire Department to report these burnings.

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire, or open burning violation call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone.
