Up to 50 centimetres of snow is expected on a high mountain section of Highway 3 on Thursday.

From Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass on Highway 3 Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning, that began Wednesday evening and will end Thursday night.

Hazardous winter conditions are expected, the warning read, with heavy snowfall reducing visibility and winter driving conditions.

“The Pacific frontal system impacting Highway 3 — Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass will bring snow until Thursday night,” the warning stated. “Rapidly accumulating snow will make travel difficult. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.”

Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions, Environment Canada explained.

“If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop,” the warning read.

Adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains.
