Kerala has generated ₹20 crore in revenue from government guest houses over the past three years, following the introduction of online booking facilities for the public, Tourism and Public Works Minister P.A. Muhammed Riyas has said.

Speaking after inaugurating the renovated Government Guest House in Sultan Bathery on Tuesday (December 17),  Mr. Riyas said that as many as three lakh people had stayed at government guest houses during this period.

The Minister stressed the importance of awareness campaigns to enhance the tourism potential of the Wayanad district. Despite challenges posed by natural disasters at Mundakkai and Chooralmala, Wayanad—a major tourist destination in India—continues to recover and progress in the tourism sector, he said.

Highlighting the tourism industry’s potential, Mr. Riyas noted that prominent hotel groups are setting up operations in Wayanad. “Government guest houses aim to provide safe, high-quality accommodation and food for visitors. A new building connected to the Sultan Bathery Guest House is expected to be completed by 2025,” the Minister said.

The renovation of the guest house includes the construction of four suite rooms, four guest rooms, a conference hall, restrooms, a kitchen, a modular kitchen, and furniture refurbishment, with an investment of ₹4.3 crore.

Delivering the presidential address, Minister for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes Welfare O.R. Kelu urged officials and staff to focus on creating excellent accommodation, food, and a welcoming atmosphere for guests.
