Met Office issues 23-hour weather warnings for UK with 60mph winds

The Met Office has issued a weather warnings for high winds on Tuesday and Wednesday, together with a warning for motorists on roads and motorways.

Forecasters have predicted 'strong and gusty' winds, and warned of 'difficult travel conditions' from the early hours through until Wednesday afternoon.

The first yellow-coded warning covers parts of southern and central

The second spans from Sheffield up to the border of Scotland, but covers the eastern fringes of Greater Manchester. A section of the M62 motorway to Leeds is also taken in by the alert.

"West to southwesterly winds will become particularly gusty over and to the east/northeast of hills late Tuesday night and into Wednesday, said the Met Office. "Gusts of 50-60 mph are possible in some areas, and potentially higher in more exposed places.

"This may cause difficult travelling conditions, especially on higher level and north-south routes."

Forecasters warned of the potential of some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer

The Met Office also referenced 'likely' delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and motorway bridges, saying delays to road, rail and air transport were 'possible'.

A number of yellow weather warnings for wind have been issued by the Met Office for parts of the UK this week. Large parts of northern England and parts of Scotland are covered by a warning from 3am to 2pm on Wednesday.

Coastal areas of Wales, Ireland and parts of Scotland also come under a separate weather warning for wind which is in place from 3pm on Tuesday until 8pm on Wednesday.
