A weather warning has been issued for snow and ice across parts of the UK with over half a foot of snow predicted.

Areas of higher ground could see as much as 20cm of snow on Monday and Tuesday, with a chance of lower levels getting up to 10cm of the white stuff, with the potential to cause traffic chaos.

The yellow weather alert affects Scotland, Yorkshire, north east England, north west, and other areas, with a full list below, Birmingham Live reports.

Through Saturday conditions are set to be cloudy across England and Wales, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle slowly moving southwards through the day, the Met Office has said. While the weather should be Brighter for Scotland and Northern Ireland, with scattered showers. Showers falling as snow across parts of Scotland.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Rebekah Hicks said: “A notable early winter cold spell will arrive across the north from Sunday and will likely reach all parts of the UK by midweek.

“Temperatures will drop as a northerly airflow develops, bringing in colder Arctic air. This introduces the possibility of snow, initially over high ground in the north from Sunday, with gusty winds also a potential hazard.

"As the cold air spreads south, wintry weather is possible more widely, and a snow and ice warning has already been issued for parts of Scotland and Northern England for early next week.

“Updates to the warnings for wintry hazards are likely, so it’s important to stay up to date with the latest forecast.”
