Birmingham Cross City Line trains cancelled for 999 alert at station

A key rail route was in chaos this afternoon with trains not running between the city centre and stations in south Birmingham. There were no trains between Longbridge and New Street, on the Cross City Line, after a major 999 response to an incident at University Station.

It happened at around 3.45pm today, Saturday, November 16, and pictures from the scene showed a large turnout of emergency crews. West Midlands Ambulance, West Midlands Fire Service and West Midlands Police were still at the scene by 4.30pm, with lines reopening just before 5pm.

The nature of the incident was not confirmed. A witness at the scene, told BirminghamLive of a significant emergency service presence at the station, with all exits blocked.

He said: "The trains on the Cross City line have stopped. There are emergency services at both entrances and exits. It is a massive police presence."

Affected stations included Northfield, Kings Norton, Bournville, Selly Oak, University (Birmingham) and Five Ways. West Midlands Railway said: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident near the railway between Longbridge and Birmingham New Street all lines are blocked.

"Train services running through these stations will be cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until the end of today, November 16." Tickets are being accepted on all National Express West Midlands bus routes as emergency services work at the scene.
