'River' runs through corridors inside Northfield school after heavy rain sparks flash flood

The MET Office issued an amber alert due to heavy rain that has flooded West Midlands areas

Staff at Northfield school described the moment a horrific flash flood caused 'a river through the corridors'. St Laurence Church Junior School on Bunbury Road has closed today (September 27) following the torrent of water.

The flood has also left the school building 'freezing' as it caused the boilers to cease. Although the school hope to open by Monday September 30, staff have appealed for dehumidifiers and portable heaters to help with clean ups.

An amber alert was issued by the Met Office as West Midlands experienced serious downpours. This has led to widespread road closures and disruption to schools, trains and more.

It has affected south Birmingham with people in several areas including Stirchley, Edgbaston and Bournville warned their properties were expected to flood.

St Laurence Church Junior School headteacher, Andy Murphy, said: "Last night we had a flash flood and a river ran through our school corridors. I can't tell you what damage was done until we clean up, but we have sodden carpets and damage to the floors.

"Our boilers are underground so they have stopped working making the school cold. We are hoping to open Monday.

"I want to say thank you to the parents as they sent 20 dehumidifiers so far, we are lucky to have a community that care about the school. We want to make people aware there is no heating in the school so we just need heating units."
