Weather maps show the exact date an Indian Summer will hit the UK - sending temperatures into the 20s at times in October. WX Charts, which uses Met Desk data, has explained the prospect of rising mercury as we head into next month.

The weather maps from WXCharts turn yellow on October 7. James Madden, from Exacta Weather, said: "Beyond this period and during later next week actually gives us a number of options ranging from more temporary heat to a continuation of cool and unsettled weather, but I would favour a mix of the two from towards the end of next week."

"This could literally bring a day or two of warm to hot and summery weather and be quickly replaced with more cooler and unsettled weather in the days to follow as the jet stream looks to go a little erratic, which in turn makes the weather much harder to predict and further analysis is required over the coming days."

"However, our forecast indications do suggest a mix of the two and still favour another heat surge or major heat surge for our earlier given dates of in and around 3rd–8th October, but this doesn't mean there will be no unsettled and cooler weather to contend with."

Exacta's Mr Madden said: "However, the devil is in the details here, and the use of the word 'brief' as that interchangeable run of some cooler/unsettled to warmer/more settled weather that I concisely covered looks like planning out as expected.

"This could even see the unsettled/cooler weather days returning later on Sunday or at the start of next week, and before the more substantial high pressure builds within our own projections for during the first third of October."

The early Met Office forecast for October 1 to October 10 explains: "Rain, heavy at times, along with strong winds are expected to affect the northeast for a time on Tuesday, but elsewhere winds will be easing and conditions will mostly be fine and dry.

"Through Wednesday and Thursday most areas should be dry with some spells of sunshine, although a few showers may affect parts of the far north and far south. Temperatures are expected to be below average. Beyond this, into the weekend and following week, probably becoming more changeable with occasional spells of rain and perhaps strong winds spreading across the UK.

"These unsettled periods are likely to be broken up by interludes of drier weather at times. Temperatures will be probably close to or slightly below normal for the time of year."
