The Met Office has warned of flooding, bus cancellations and closed roads this weekend after a yellow weather warning. On Sunday September 22, the Met said heavy rain could cause disruption.

Areas across the south-west, up to and including Birmingham, could be affected by difficult driving conditions and temporary road closures with spray and flooding. The warning was in place for the entire day, with warnings now in place from today across all the weekend.

There was a small chance some rural communities could be temporarily cut off by flooded roads. Significant bus and train delays and cancellations were also a possibility.

Birmingham: A Child Poverty Emergency

Child poverty is soaring in Birmingham and without urgent change, will only get worse. Having worked with charities and community groups, BirminghamLive is campaigning for the following changes to start to turn the tide:

  1. End the two-child benefit cap
  2. Provide free school meals to every child in poverty
  3. Create a city “aid bank” for baby and child essentials
  4. Protect children’s and youth services
  5. Create permanent, multi year Household Support Fund and give more Discretionary Housing grants
  6. Set up child health and wellbeing hubs in our most deprived neighbourhoods
  7. Appoint a Birmingham child poverty tsar
  8. Provide free public travel for young people

What you can do to help.

Midlands areas affected include:

  • Herefordshire
  • Shropshire
  • Staffordshire
  • Stoke-on-Trent
  • Telford and Wrekin
  • Warwickshire
  • West Midlands Conurbation
  • Worcestershire

Other affected regions include the East Midlands, the east of England, London and south-east England, North West England and Wales. Yesterday Brummies were advised to prepare an emergency flood kit if their property was at risk of flooding.

A statement on the Met Office site reads: "Showers and thunderstorms are expected to merge into broader areas of heavy rain across parts of Wales, central and southern England during Sunday.

"Whilst the strongest signal for impactful rainfall totals appears to be centred across east Wales and west-central England, there is potential right across this highlighted region for some areas to see 30-50 mm in less than 6 hours, with a few places receiving 60-80mm over the course of 12-24 hours.

"Southwest England looks likely to see some heavy rain during the early hours of Sunday morning, breaking up into slow-moving, heavy and in places thundery downpours during the day time. Meanwhile, the areas of heavy rain are likely to continue pushing north and west, becoming slow moving across some northern and possibly eastern reaches of the warning area during the rest of Sunday."
