'Poshest' town in UK named best staycation spot but West Midlands town came second

The trend of staycations has seen a significant rise, with many Brits opting to holiday within the UK. And one town has been named the best spot for a break in the country

Harrogate in Yorkshire, often referred to as "the poshest" town, has claimed the title of the UK's top staycation destination. Not far from Greater Manchester, Harrogate triumphed, securing the number one spot over other popular choices like Stratford-upon-Avon and Anglesey.

The phenomenon of staycations has surged dramatically, with a growing number of Brits choosing to explore holiday options within the country. A report from the Manchester Evening News reveals that AA specialists have investigated the finest staycation spots which can be conveniently reached by car.

They took into account a variety of factors, including quality of accommodation, local satisfaction scores, availability of parking, petrol stations, and EV charging facilities, creating the "ultimate top 10 locations for the perfect staycation".

Rising to the top, Harrogate has notched up the highest 'happiness rating', an impressive 7.8 out of 10, and offers a range of 62 different activities for visitors, according to the Express, reports the Mirror.

Celebrated for its refined architecture, the renowned Betty's Cafe and Tea Rooms, RHS Harlow Carr gardens, amongst other attractions, Harrogate is brimming with things to see and do.

Set against the backdrop of stunning natural landscapes, tourists can also venture to nearby sites such as the striking Brimham Rocks.

Harrogate, a town that gained fame in the 19th century as a popular retreat for those seeking the healing properties of its mineral springs, now offers a perfect blend of historical charm and modern comforts, making it an irresistible destination for both tourists and locals.

A visit to Valley Gardens is a must when in Harrogate. This stunning park is home to a variety of flowers, walking trails, and remnants of the town's famous spa waters.

The Royal Pump Room Museum is another highlight, offering a glimpse into Harrogate's spa history and charting the town's development as a health resort.

Not to be outdone, Stratford-upon-Avon secured second place with a happiness rating of 7.6, boasting over 6,000 parking spaces and more than 60 attractions.

Best known as the birthplace of Shakespeare, it offers delightful walks and historical sites such as the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

In third place was Cornwall's Newquay, which boasts 326 AA-approved accommodations, over 3,500 parking spots, and a happiness rating of 7.5.
