UK households have been urged to consider taking down their curtains and putting them behind a radiator as we head towards the new energy price cap on October 1. The new Ofgem price cap takes hold this week, taking bills to £1771.

Energy experts have revealed the best home heating strategies to stay warm and save money this winter, along with tips to reduce reliance on central heating. James Longley, managing director at Utility Bidder, recommends maintaining your thermostat between 18C and 21C during the colder months.

“Studies have shown that heating your home to between 18C and 21C is ideal for staying warm without inflating your energy bills,” Longley explained. "This temperature is supported by the World Health Organization, which recommends heating homes to at least 18C to maintain good health and a positive sleep routine."

He also had five tips for households to stay warm, including making the most of shower steam. "Hot showers produce steam, which naturally warms the air," he said, adding: "Keep your bathroom door open while showering so that the steam spreads into other areas of the house, creating an extra layer of warmth."

Households should also look at strategically placing furniture and curtains, too. "Furniture placement can significantly impact heating efficiency," he said, adding: "Ensure radiators are not blocked by large items such as sofas, as they absorb heat meant for the room.

"Keeping radiators exposed will help distribute warmth more effectively." He went on: "When curtains cover a radiator, they funnel heat toward the window instead of the room. Tucking curtains behind the radiator allows the heat to spread evenly across the space.

"Even the smallest draft can let cold air in and warm air out. Make sure to block drafts by using draft excluders at the base of doors, sealing pet flaps, and fixing letterboxes. This simple step can make a noticeable difference in maintaining warmth."
