Derbyshire's Peak District braced for 11 hours of extreme weather as warning issued

by · Derbyshire Live

The Met Office has warned parts of the Peak District could be hit by winds of up to 60mph, causing disruption to transport. A yellow weather warning has been issued from 3am on Wednesday (December 18) through to 2pm.

Northern villages and towns near the Sheffield border - such as Buxton and Bakewell - are covered by the warning. The forecaster warns that remote areas could be hit with winds between 50mph and 60mph.

The warning states that there will be possible disruption to bus and train services, with some journeys taking longer. A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "West to southwesterly winds will become particularly gusty over and to the east/northeast of hills late Tuesday night and into Wednesday. Gusts of 50-60 mph are possible in some areas, and potentially higher in more exposed places.

"This may cause difficult travelling conditions, especially on higher level and north-south routes. Strong and gusty winds may cause some difficult travel conditions on Wednesday."

Forecasters say Wednesday will be a cloudy, damp and windy start to the day, with outbreaks of rain. However as the day goes on the Met Office stated that there will be sunny spells throughout the afternoon before the rain returns in the evening.

A large proportion of the areas affected by the warning are in the North East and North Yorkshire.
