Health experts issue norovirus warning as winter vomiting bug surges across UK

by · ChronicleLive

Health experts have issued a stark warning as the winter vomiting bug norovirus, characterised by several days of sickness and diarrhoea, sees a resurgence. Highly contagious in nature, anyone suffering from the virus is being urged to avoid places like work environments, educational institutions, and bustling centres to prevent further spread.

Lesley Larkin, Lead Epidemiologist at UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), stated: "Norovirus cases are on the rise again as we head into winter."

She added vital advice for those affected: "Take steps to avoid passing the infection on. If you have diarrhoea and/or vomiting, do not return to work, school or nursery until 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped and don't prepare food for others in that time either. If you are unwell, avoid visiting people in hospitals and care homes to prevent passing on the infection in these settings."

Further prevention techniques include hand washing with soap and water, using bleach-based products for cleaning, while noting that alcohol gels are ineffective against norovirus. Recently compiled figures, notably lower during the week of England’s October half-term, have begun rising again.

Reports from the Hospital Norovirus Outbreak Reporting System (HNORS) indicate that outbreaks are currently 5% above the five-season average, reports the Mirror.

There are likely several factors contributing to the rise in lab reports, including changes in epidemiology following the COVID-19 pandemic and alterations in testing and reporting procedures. Symptoms of Norovirus include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, high temperature, abdominal pain, and aching limbs.

It's crucial to note that Norovirus can lead to dehydration, particularly in vulnerable groups like young children, the elderly, or those with compromised immune systems. Therefore, if you fall ill, it's vital to stay well-hydrated.
