Devon pharmacists call for awareness amid healthcare strain

People across Devon lack of awareness about new services launched by pharmacies at the start of the year, with nearly half (44%) of respondents unaware of these offerings.

A recent survey conducted by Charac and CEO Santosh Sahu (pictured) in collaboration with YouGov reveals a concerning trend: only 23% of patients would consider visiting a pharmacist for minor health conditions instead of a GP.

A spokesperson for Charact said: “This is particularly troubling given the current state of the NHS, especially in women's health. Over 750,000 women are currently stuck on waiting lists for gynaecological services, making it the fastest-growing demand among all elective specialities.

“Nearly half of these patients have been waiting more than 18 weeks for an appointment, and approximately 30,000 have been waiting over a year. The conditions these women are facing—such as heavy periods, chronic pain, and incontinence—require urgent attention.

“Many of these women could potentially receive treatment much sooner if they turned to their local pharmacy. Pharmacists are now equipped to offer services for urinary tract infections (UTIs), contraceptive pills, period management, and even support for pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause. Despite this, 70% of those experiencing UTI symptoms still choose to see their GP first, with only 20% seeking help from their local pharmacist.

“This gap in awareness is a missed opportunity for both patients and the healthcare system. Local pharmacies offer accessible, immediate care, yet many are unaware of the full scope of services they provide. With the NHS under pressure and waiting times growing, it's crucial to spread the word about the healthcare solutions available right on our doorstep.

“Public health campaigns and educational efforts could help alleviate the burden on the NHS, while providing patients with faster access to the care they need. It's time to rethink how we utilise our local pharmacies—and to ensure that more people are aware of the valuable services they offer.”
