ITV Lorraine's Dr Hilary shares simple tip to ward off norovirus

by · NottinghamshireLive

ITV regular Dr Hilary Jones has shared a simple tip to help fend off the dreaded norovirus as cases have spiked alarmingly. In recent weeks cases of the 'winter vomiting bug' have jumped up by a worrying 30%, double the typical rate for the season.

The highly infectious virus can knock you off your feet with severe symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, alongside fevers, headaches, and body aches. With an unprecedented increase in flu, RSV, and Covid in addition to norovirus, the British Medical Association fears this winter could be one of the most challenging ever faced by our NHS.

During this period, Dr Hilary stresses the importance of looking after your immune system. He advises: "Winter is a difficult time for many of us as the days get shorter and the weather becomes bleak, but it can make people more susceptible to serious illnesses."

"This year, as flu, RSV and Covid cases rise earlier, the British Medical Association have warned this could be the worst winter on record for the NHS. It's important now more than ever that we all do what we can."

One way of keeping bugs at bay is simple - and cost-free. Dr Hilary explains how people can protect themselves just by getting plenty of sleep. He said: "Making sure to get at least 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night is essential for maintaining overall health, especially during winter. Lack of sleep can weaken your immune response and make you more susceptible to illnesses."

"Establishing a consistent sleep schedule and creating a relaxing bedtime routine can enhance sleep quality - giving your body a better chance to withstand winter's challenges."

He further advises "cutting back on the booze", noting: "It's no secret that excessive alcohol can weaken the immune system and increase the risk of falls and accidents, which become more concerning as we get older. Drinking in moderation can help maintain balance and coordination, reducing the likelihood of mishaps."

He continued, "Additionally, staying mindful of alcohol consumption can support overall health and well-being, permitting you to enjoy social gatherings without the risk of hurting yourself."

Dr. Hilary is promoting discounted Newfoundland health MOT test kits meant for home monitoring; they were initially priced at £66 but are currently being offered at just £14.99 to encourage early detection of health issues and reduce hospital visits.
