Amazing community support saw a Dumfriesshire cancer fundraising group “overwhelmed” by public generosity amounting to more than £8,000 on Saturday.

The Moffat branch of Macmillan Cancer Support held a successful coffee morning in the town hall which raised a whopping £4,011 through refreshments, stalls and raffles which were well supported.

Anne Garrett from the group said: “We would like to thank everyone for coming to the coffee morning. We raised £4,011 – which was absolutely fantastic.

“Thank you everyone so much for all the help, donations, raffle prizes, bottles, cakes and buying raffle tickets.

“We couldn’t have done this without our fantastic group, the volunteers, and my ever suffering husband on the lead up to the coffee morning. Thank you also to the Moffat Town Hall girls for doing the teas and coffees and, of course, Billy the hall keeper who can’t do enough to help us. Fantastic.”

It didn’t just stop there as the occasion prompted a flurry of funding for the Macmillan Cancer Support branch.

A cheque for £200 was handed over from Moffat Rugby Club for helping at the rugby 10s, and another, for £150 was presented by the Solway Vehicle Enthusiasts.

It was followed by a cheque for £4,000 from the organisers of June’s popular Moffat Classic Car Rally, the Moffat and District Motor Club and Galloway Motorcycle Club.

Anne said: “The cheques were the icing on the cake and we are grateful to all three organisations for their support for Macmillan Cancer Support. Thank you so much.”

In addition to the cancer group, the Moffat and District Motor Club and Galloway Motorcycle Club also took the opportunity to present other groups with cheques from cash raised at the car rally.

Donations were also made to: Prostate Buddies (via Galloway Motorcycle Club); Moffat Civic Pride; Moffat Lunch Club; Moffat Senior Citizen Christmas Party; and Upper Annandale Youth FC.

Moffat and District Motor Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all who supported the rally. (A member, Iain Cochrane, was absent for the photos).
