The Kelowna Fire Department doused a pair of brush fires along the rail trail Thursday morning.

Crews were called to two fires off the rail trail in Mill Creek Linear Park between Hardy Street and Dilworth Drive shortly before 11 a.m.

“We responded with two engines and a bush truck, and we're able to quickly knock it down and stop it from spreading further into the brush,” said platoon captain Micah Volk.

One of the fires grew to 20-by-30 feet and the other was 10-by-10 feet before crews brought them both under control.

The cause of the fires is unknown at this time.

“There looks like some evidence of an encampment, people living in the bush, but it's still under investigation,” Volk said.

Ten firefighters responded to the two fires.

Despite the arrival of fall, Volk says the brush is still “fairly dry.”

RCMP and Kelowna bylaw were also at the scene.
