Panayampadam accident: Joint inspection team submits report on possible action plans

by · The Hindu

A joint inspection team entrusted with the preparation of an action plan to put an end to the frequent road accidents at Panayampadam near Kalladikkode in Palakkad district, where four girls recently lost their lives, submitted their final report to Palakkad District Collector S. Chithra on Monday.

The team, comprising officials from the Road Transport Authority, police and Public Works Department, came up with their suggestions after inspecting the spot to list out the most viable and practical solutions.

District Police Chief (Palakkad) R. Viswanath, Palakkad Regional Transport Officer C.U. Mujeeb and PWD (NH) Executive Engineer K. Abdul Azeez were the leading members in the joint inspection team that suggested long term measures to address the safety concerns. Based on their preliminary findings, speed control measures and police surveillance has already been initiated at the spot.

PWD sources said the proposal for the installation of warning boards and reflectors near the accident spot had already been submitted to the higher authorities. This could be completed soon in addition to the measures under way to improve traction on the road surface, they added.

Earlier, the local people and the people’s representatives had suggested that frequent accidents at the spot could be prevented only by straightening the road near the accident zone. They had called upon the PWD authorities to roughen the road surface and construct a drainage to avoid overflowing storm water on the road during the rainy season.
