A.P. records light rainfall, red alert for Nov. 30 continues for Rayalaseema districts

Depression intensifies into cyclonic storm ‘Fengal’, likely to cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts around Saturday afternoon

Tirupati and Nellore districts received very light to light rainfall on November 29, Friday. The maximum rainfall of 18 mm was recorded at Garikipalem in Ranasthalam mandal of Srikakulam district, according to the data available on the Andhra Pradesh State Development Planning Society as of 7 p.m. Other places in coastal districts too recorded very light to light rain between 8.30 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday.

According to information from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) at 5 p.m., the deep depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 13 kmph during the past six hours, intensified into a cyclonic storm ‘Fengal’ and lay centred at 2.30 p.m. on Friday over the same region, about 310 km north-northeast of Trincomalee, 260 km east of Nagappattinam, 270 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 300 km southeast of Chennai.

It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph, gusting to 90 kmph, around November 30 afternoon.

However, red alert continues for the districts of SPSR Nellore, YSR, Annamayya, Chittoor and Tirupati for November 30, Saturday, as extremely heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in these districts.

Thunderstorm, accompanied by lightning and strong winds gusting up 50 kmph, was also likely, the IMD said.

Meanwhile, an orange alert has been given for Prakasam for November 30.
