CMFRI to conduct short course on fish taxonomy

by · The Hindu

The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) will conduct a short course on taxonomic techniques for marine biodiversity conservation between February 18 and 28.

The course, sponsored by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), aims to sensitise National Agricultural Research System (NARS) professionals with the knowledge and skills to apply taxonomic principles to fisheries development.

The training will cover both theoretical concepts and practical applications, including the use of software tools. It will also provide insights into the critical role of statistics in taxonomy and its applications in fisheries research, said a press release on Monday (December 16).

The initiative aligns with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The training assumes significance as marine taxonomy is crucial for understanding and conserving ocean biodiversity, enabling the identification and monitoring of species critical to ecosystem health. Taxonomy drives discoveries in biotechnology, medicine, and marine resource management.

The last date for receipt of applications is January 22, 2025. More details are available on the CMFRI website (www.cmfri.org.in) Phone: 9446415736.
