Paediatric oral tumour removed through minimally invasive procedure at MGMGH
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduDoctors at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) recently removed an oral tumour from the upper windpipe of an 11-month old infant through an advanced minimally invasive surgical procedure.
According to a statement on Wednesday, the infant from Nannai village in Perambalur district was brought to the government hospital by his parents due to complaints of breathlessness, wheezing, and malnutrition earlier in November.
Diagnostic tests revealed the presence of a tumorous growth in the upper section of the infant’s windpipe. When an endoscopy confirmed the diagnosis, on November 14, it was decided to treat the patient through the ‘coblator’, a medical device that uses radio-frequency energy and low-temperature plasma to precisely treat soft tissues during surgical procedures, in a minimally invasive operation.
Under the guidance of K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College dean S. Kumaravel and MGMGH Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT) specialist Radhakrishnan, the operation was led by paediatric surgeon Ravikumar and a team of medical professionals.
The procedure was performed free of charge under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. The infant had successfully recovered from the procedure and would be monitored for nutritional improvement, said the statement.
