IMD issues red alert for Tirupati, Nellore districts for November 29

by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Tirupati and Nellore districts for November 29, Friday (November 29, 2024), as very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in this region under the influence of the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal.
IMD, Amaravati, Director S. Stella, in a 11.30 a.m. bulletin on Thursday (November 28, 2024) said there would be ‘fairly widespread’ rains in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema while the north coastal Andhra Pradesh would receive scattered rains on November 29, 2024.
In the district-wise forecast for Friday (November 29, 2024), the IMD said Tirupati and Nellore districts are likely to receive isolated extremely heavy rainfall and issued a red alert. Chittoor and Annammayya districts may receive isolated very heavy rainfall and have been given an orange alert. Prakasam, Sri Sathya Sai and YSR districts have been put on a yellow alert.

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has advised farmers to take necessary measures to keep the crops safe. The APSDMA Managing Director, Ronanki Kurmanath, asked the farmers to support their horticulture crops with a stick and keep the harvested paddy safe, as light to moderate rains are expected across the coastal districts till December 1.
Meanwhile, the IMD, in its morning bulletin on Thursday (November 28, 2024), noted that the deep depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal lay centred at 11.30 p.m. on Wednesday (November 27, 2024) over the same region, about 100 km east-northeast of Trincomalee, 320 km southeast of Nagappattinam, 410 km southeast of Puducherry and 490 km south-southeast of Chennai.
It is very likely to continue to move nearly north-northwestwards skirting Sri Lanka coast and intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 12 hours. Thereafter, it will continue to move north-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram around November 30 as a deep depression.
