Cyclonic storm over Bay of Bengal to bring intense rainfall over T.N. coasts till December 1

The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued orange and yellow alerts, which indicate rainfall of heavy to very heavy intensity, for various coastal districts

With the cyclonic storm brewing over the Bay of Bengal predicted to move towards the Tamil Nadu coast, heavy downpour is likely to continue over the coastal areas of the State till Sunday (December 1, 2024).

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued orange and yellow alerts, which indicate rainfall of heavy to very heavy intensity, for various coastal districts, including Chennai, on Thursday (November 28, 2024).

A bulletin issued by the RMC on Wednesday afternoon noted that on Wednesday (November 27, 2024) morning, the deep depression was over Southwest Bay of Bengal, about 120 km east southeast of Trincomalee, 370 km southeast of Nagapattinam, 470 km southeast of Puducherry, and 550 km south-southeast of Chennai.

It is very likely to continue to move north-northwestwards and intensify further into a cyclonic storm during the next 12 hours. The system will continue to move north-northwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast skirting the Sri Lanka coast over the next two days.

This is the fourth weather system that has formed during the Northeast monsoon since mid-October. The RMC is yet to announce the crossing point of the prevailing system.

Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts may experience extremely intense rainfall above 24.4 cm till 8.30 a.m. on Thursday. Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Puducherry may receive intense rainfall up to 24 cm in isolated places. Twelve other districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam, would receive heavy rainfall.

A similar rainfall pattern would occur over the coastal region and north Tamil Nadu from November 29 to December 2. The RMC has also warned that strong winds of speed gusting up to 65 km per hour are likely over the coastal areas of T.N., Puducherry, and Karaikal on November 28.
