The incessant rain that lashed Tiruvarur district for the past few days has reportedly affected less than 750 acres of agriculture fields.

According to an official release, Minister for Industries T. R. B. Raaja on Wednesday said that so far around 500 to 750 acres of agriculture fields had been affected in the rain as per the assessment carried out by officials so far. The damage might increase if the rain continued for another one or two days.

Appreciating the district administration for initiating precautionary measures well in advance, the Minister said that 176 places in the district had been identified as low-lying area and attention was being given by the officials to ensure safety and minimise the difficulties of people. The spot inspection revealed that rainwater was getting drained from the low-lying areas.

While those residing in low-lying areas were being moved to temporary shelters, the number of dwelling units near water bodies was being gradually reduced due to identification and issuance of pattas at alternative sites, the Minister added.

During the visit, Mr. Raaja inspected the clearing of hyacinth plant accumulated in the channels at Kizhaperumazhi village panchayat in Thiruthuraipoondi Panchayat Union.

Meanwhile, in Thanjavur district rain water accumulated in Nannan Tank at Okkanadu Kizhaiyur in Orathanadu block was drained through the drain channels to avoid inundation of agriculture fields in the area. Collector B. Priyanka Pankajam inspected the water draining exercise on Wednesday, the release added.
