Heavy rains lash Chittoor and Annamayya in Andhra

by · The Hindu

The formation of Cyclone Fengal over the Bay of Bengal brought heavy rains to Chittoor and Annamayya districts on Tuesday night. While the Chittoor received 127 mm, Annamayya registered 132 mm of rainfall.

Inclement weather prevailed in the region on Wednesday, with rain forecast for the next two days.

According to Indian Meteorological Department, the mandals of Vayalpadu, K.V. Palle, Kalakada and Gurramkonda received a downpour on Tuesday night, much to the distress of tomato farmers. This sudden change in the air and soil moisture might adversely affect crops.

In Chittoor, heavy rain was reported in Irala, Tavanampalle and Puthalapattu mandals, followed by Nindra, Karveti Nagaram and Vijayapuram on the eastern side.

The silver lining

Palamaner and Kuppam regions had received poor to deficit rainfall during the Southwest Monsoon and even during the spell of rains in early November. A majority of the village tanks had showed a dip in water levels and several of them had gone dry.

The fresh spell of rain has raised hopes among the farmers that it might help improve the groundwater table and bring some inflows into village tanks, besides contributing to lessen the fodder problem.
