Tirunelveli Lok Sabha Member C. Robert Bruce on Wednesday met the Union Minister of Fisheries Rajiv Ranjan Singh and appealed to him to include coastal villages in Tirunelveli district in the Union Government’s scheme to develop 100 fishing villages as Climate Resilient Coastal Fishermen Villages.

In his petition, Mr. Bruce highlighted that a significant portion of Tirunelveli district is coastal, with many families dependent on fishing and allied activities for their livelihood. However, recently due to inadequate opportunities, a large number of people are forced to migrate abroad to work as fishermen.

The villages in the district including Kootapuli, Perumanal, Idinthakarai, Thomayarpuram, Koonthankuzhi, Uvary, Kootapanai, Kooduthalai and Georgiapuram were mentioned in the letter for considering under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) scheme.

Mr. Bruce also emphasised that the approval of the scheme for these areas would significantly improve the livelihoods of approximately 8,000 to 10,000 fishermen in the Tirunelveli district.
