Residents urge government to open Pasiyavaram bridge

Weather-permitting, the 1032 mt long two-lane wide bridge connecting Pasiyavaram with the mainland in Pulicat will be opened soon.

“We need to finish giving the final coat of anti-corrosion paint to protect the structure. Due to the rains, we have put it on hold. Since the water below is brackish, this is a very essential piece of work,” said an official in the Highways department, which has finished constructing the facility that will allow residents of Pasiyavaram, Sathankuppam, Edamanikuppam, Vairavankuppam and Edaimani Colony to reach the mainland safely. Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians have been using the facility after temporary ramps were formed.

“Though work began in 2021, we have had only about six months time each year to construct the bridge due to water levels raising during October- March. Shortage of earth for the formation of approach ramps was a major stumbling block and the contractor brought the material all the way from Cheyyar so that the project can be completed,” explained a source.

Durai Mahendran of the Tamil Nadu Meenavar Sangam, said that lighting needs to be provided for the bridge if people are to use it in the dark. “We have fought for so many years for the bridge but it is yet to be declared open. Earlier, children used to cross the waters by foot to reach schools and colleges. Hopefully, it will be inaugurated soon,” he said.

Since the bridge is located inside Pulicat lake, which is a bird sanctuary, it took quite some time to get permissions. The public used to find it very difficult to access health facilities on the mainland. The sick had to be physically carried across the waters. Nearly 7,000 people will benefit if the bridge is opened, he said.
