A 25-year-old tribal youth from Palakkad, who was critically injured after being stabbed deep below his left shoulder, was saved by doctors at Thrissur Medical College Hospital after a complex surgery.

The youth had suffered severe damage to the subclavian artery, a major blood vessel that supply blood to the upper body, making the situation extremely critical. Despite the challenges, the surgical team acted swiftly to save his life. Health Minister Veena George congratulated the entire team for their dedication.

On November 1, the injured youth was brought to the hospital, where he was immediately assessed and rushed into emergency surgery. The damage to the subclavian artery, located close to the heart, posed an immense challenge. Blood loss and close proximity of other vital structures made it even more difficult.

To add to the complexity, the artery was located near the brachial plexus, a network of nerves. Any slight mistake could have resulted in either immediate death or permanent paralysis of the left arm.

With great precision, in a delicate operation lasting over three hours, the surgical team brought back the youth to life from the brink of death.

Following the surgery, the patient received exceptional care from the surgical team, including a team of four specialists and post-graduate residents, who ensured his recovery over the next 20 days.

The Medical College Hospital, Thrissur, which is celebrating its 45th anniversary, provided the finest multi-specialty care, showcasing its state-of-the-art facilities and expertise.

The surgery was led by Ravindran C. and Haridas, heads of two surgical units, along with heart surgeon Praveen, anaesthesia professor Sunil M., and a dedicated team of doctors, including Parvathi, Naji, Anjali, Siju, and Anjana. The nursing team, led by Anu and Bincy, played a crucial role in the patient’s care.

The administrative coordination came from Principal Ashokan N., Vice-Principal Sanalkumar K.B., Superintendent-in-Charge Radhika M., Deputy Superintendent Santhosh P.V., RMO Shaji U.A., and ARMO Shibi, who ensured smooth operations throughout the entire process.
