ICAR-CIFT launches five-day training programme on ‘Augmenting Safety of Fish and Fishery Products’

A five-day training programme for graduate students on ‘Augmenting Safety of Fish and Fishery Products Through Microbiological Testing’ under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP), a flagship programme of the Government of India, is being organised by the Visakhapatnam Research Centre of ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), here from December 16 to 20.

The programme is aimed at enhancing the skills of students in testing fish and fishery products for food safety, specifically focusing on microbiological and biotechnological methods. A total of 12 graduate students from the Biotechnology and Microbiology department of Andhra University, Dr. Lankapalli Bullayya College and Government Women’s Degree College, Visakhapatnam are attending the training programme.

The programme was formally inaugurated by V.V.S.S. Sharma, Chief Scientist, CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Visakhapatnam Regional Centre. He also released a training manual on the agenda and distributed it to all the participants.

The meeting was presided by U. Sreedhar, Scientist-in-Charge and Principal Scientist, Visakhapatnam Research Centre of ICAR-CIFT. He explained the outreach activities of ICAR-CIFT under different flagship programmes such as SCSP, STC/TSP, NEH, among others.

B. Madhusudana Rao, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFT introduced the training programme. He said that during the five-day programme, the students will be imparted training on analysing fish samples for total bacterial counts, faecal indicator bacteria and bacterial pathogens such as Salmonella, Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus.

K. Ahamed Basha, Scientist, ICAR-CIFT and Coordinator of the SCSP, and M. Prasanna Kumar, Technical Officer, also spoke at the inaugural programme.
