Woman trapped under car while de-icing it in freezing conditions

A woman got trapped under her car while trying to de-ice it. Emergency services rushed to the scene at 9.05am this morning (November 22) on Birch Road, Wardle, to free Ann Dickens, 77.

Neighbours told the Manchester Evening News they did their best to keep her warm while they waited for help. done their best to "keep her warm" while they waited for help to arrive. Firefighters and paramedics were reportedly on the scene 'within five minutes'.

Crews managed to free Ms Dickens before she was rushed to hospital with serious injuries, which are not thought to be life-threatening.

Daughter Stacey told the M.E.N. her mother was still in hospital on Friday afternoon and was due to have x-rays. "She had gone out to de-ice her car," she said. "She'd opened the door and put the key in, not realising it was in gear, and it shunted backwards and trapped her leg under the car.

"The foot that the car went over is just bruised, luckily, but the car door has fractured her other leg. But she's in good spirits. The emergency services were amazing."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At around 9.10am this morning (Friday, November 22), two fire engines from Rochdale fire station and the enhanced rescue unit from Ashton-under-Lyne fire station were called to reports of a crash involving one vehicle on Birch Road, Wardle.

"Crews helped to release one person from under the vehicle before they were transferred into the care of North West Ambulance Service and taken to hospital. Firefighters were in attendance for roughly one hour."
