Nineteen flood warnings and dozens more flood alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency amid heavy rainfall in parts of England.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for rain, which is now in force in parts of central and southern England until 9pm tonight. Areas covered by the warning include Oxford, Bath and Milton Keynes.

Met Office chief meteorologist Steve Willington said: “Following wet weather in recent days, rain, heavy at times, is influencing today’s weather for much of England and parts of Wales. The higher totals are likely within the amber warning area, where some will see 60 to 80mm of rain through the day while a few places could see in excess of 120mm.

A yellow rain warning covering most of England and Wales is also in place until midnight tonight. The rain is expected to reduce in intensity later on Monday evening, but forecasters have warned that there are signals for further unsettled weather later in the week.

Some parts of the UK have been struck by flash floods amid the heavy rain. Parts of Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and London have been submerged by flood waters, causing widespread travel disruption and damage to properties.

At the time of writing, 19 flood warnings - meaning flooding is expected - and 69 flood alerts have been issued across England. Areas covered by flood warnings include Childswickham in Worcestershire, parts of Warwickshire and Hertfordshire, Luton, Leighton Buzzard and parts of London.

Environment Agency flood duty manager Sarah Cook said: "Persistent heavy rain and thunderstorms could lead to significant surface water flooding on Monday across parts of England.

"The impacts could include localised flooding in urban areas and fast-responding catchments, including some property flooding as well as travel disruption. The risk from river flooding remains low.

"Environment Agency teams are out on the ground and ready to support local authorities in responding to surface water flooding. We urge people to plan their journeys carefully, follow the advice of local emergency services on the roads and not to drive through flood water – it is often deeper than it looks and just 30cm of flowing water is enough to float your car."

According to the Environment Agency, people who live in an area covered by a flood warning need to 'act now' as they may be asked to evacuate their homes. People should prepare for flooding by following these steps:

  • turn off your gas, electricity and water supplies, if it’s safe to do so
  • move your family, vehicles, pets and important items to safety, for example upstairs or to higher ground
  • if you have them, use flood protection products, for example flood barriers or air brick covers
  • follow advice from your local council or the emergency services

The Environment Agency issues a flood warning when forecasts show that flooding is expected from either rivers, heavy rain or high tides. Flood warnings are issued between 30 minutes and two hours before flooding is expected.

Flood alerts are issued when flooding is possible. If a flood alert is issued for your area you should be ready to follow your flood plan, have insurance documents and any medications ready, avoid walking, cycling or driving through any flood water and move any livestock and farming equipment away from areas likely to flood, the Environment Agency says.
