15 places expected to flood today - where people have been told to 'act now'

Flooding is expected to affect eight areas in and around Greater Manchester as Storm Bert hits the UK. Heavy rain and snow is expected in the north of England.

High winds, heavy rain and snow is also expected to batter areas in Scotland, Wales and the north east with several weather warnings in place. The Met Office has also issued rare amber alerts, with concerns about travel disruption, power cuts and hazards presented by icy surfaces, especially in rural areas.

The Government has now also issued alerts for flood warnings in 15 areas of the UK, so far, and is constantly being updated. The warnings indicate where flooding is expected to happen, including in Greater Manchester.

Rising river levels of the River Irwell are expected to cause flooding from now until daybreak on Sunday 24. Flooding is forecast locations near the Irwell, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around properties adjacent to the river.

The Government has warned to take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water, and to start acting now on your flood plan if you have one for the areas expected to be affected.

So far, there are also 70 flood alerts where flooding is possible across the country, including Bury in Greater Manchester at the Upper River Irwell catchment with Oldham, Bolton, Rochdale, Haslingden, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall.

River Irwell at Bacup

Flood warning area: Areas at risk include Burnley Road around Bacup Leisure Hall to St James Square, along Market St, Henrietta St and Park Rd Industrial Estates. Also properties around the Library and St James Street to Lumb Scar, Beech Industrial Estate and Vale Street.

River Irwell at Irwell Vale

Flood warning area: Areas at risk include Irwell Vale, Aitken Street, Bowker Street, Chapel Terrace, Hardsough Fold, Milne Street and Parkinson Fold.

River Irwell at Strongstry and Chatterton

Flood warning area: Areas at risk are those adjacent to the River Irwell through Strongstry and Chatterton. Including North St, Strongstry Bridge, Chatterton Rd. Other areas at risk include Areas in the vicinity of, Bolton Rd North, and Cuba industrial estate.

River Irwell at Stubbylee Bridge and Stacksteads, riverside properties

Flood warning area: Areas at risk include land and properties along the river in Stubbylee Bridge and Stacksteads, including Futures, Acres and Stubbylee Parks and parts of Newchurch Road, Farholme Lane and Brandwood.

River Irwell at Stubbylee Bridge, Farholme area and Stacksteads, Brandwood Park areas

Flood warning area: Areas at risk include properties at Stubbylee Bridge including Stuart, Herbert and Branch Streets, the Ambulance station on Commercial Street, Brandwood Park and Waterbarn Lane areas of Stacksteads, and part of Glen Crescent and Toll Bar Business Park.

Flood warning for River Irwell at Rawtenstall

Flood warning area: Properties on and adjacent to Burnley Road; south of Constable Lee Bridge. Bocholt Way and Bacup Road from Bury Road to Lench Road. Properties near Hareholme mill, Victoria Works and Holme Lane including parts of New Hall Hey Road.

Pearl Brook at Horwich, area close to the river from Bridge Street and Old Station Park to the M61

Flood warning area: Horwich town centre from Bridge Street and Old Station Park to the M61, homes and businesses on Winter Hey Lane at the junction with Chorley New Road, Mason Street and adjoining roads including Back Emmett Street and Chorley New Road.

Rivers in Accrington and Oswaldtwistle

Flood warning area: River Hyndburn, Woodnook & Broad Oak Water, Antley Syke, Pleck, Hynburn, Tinker, Lottice and Whiteash Brooks in Accrington and Oswaldtwistle. Comprising Dunnyshop, Baxenden, Lower Fold, Peel Bank, Barnfield and Little Moor End.

River Calder at Central Todmorden

Flood warning area: Properties and businesses in central Todmorden from the Library to Commercial Street including Halifax Road and Sackville Street.

River Calder at Hebden Bridge - Mytholm and Hebble End

Flood warning area: Mytholm and Hebble End including Eaves Road, Church Lane, King Street, Market Street, Stubbing Drive, Stubbing Holme Road and Hebble End Bridge.

River Calder at Todmorden from the Cricket Ground to the Railway Bridge

Flood warning area: Todmorden Cricket Ground to the Railway Bridge south of Burnley Road including Queen Street and Back Ridge Street.

River Calder at Todmorden - Patmos Burnley Road

Flood warning area: Todmorden from Harehills Street to Todmorden Bus Station including all properties north of Burnley Road.

Poaka Beck, The Yarl, Hagg Gill and Butts Beck at Dalton in Furness including Town Centre, Queen St

Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the Poaka Beck, The Yarl, Hagg Gill and Butts Beck, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around areas of the town adjacent the Cricket Ground, Football Club, Bow Bridge and Goose Green including Ulverston Road, Queen Street, Littlefields, Beckside Road, Station Road, Market Street, Glenfield, Garden Lea and Goose Green.

Walsden Water at Walsden

Flood warning area: Walsden from Bottomley Lock to Clough Mill including Rochdale Road, Walsden Station and Walsden School.

Whitewell Brook at Piercy and Newchurch from Ashworth Road to Wood Lea Road

Flood warning area: Properties adjacent to Brook including Globe, Dale, Gaghills, Mill End and Albion Mills. Waterfoot Business Centre. Properties on Burnley Road East, Rose, Booth and Clarke Holme Streets, the Close and Thornfield Avenue including the bakery.
