Environmental Agency issues flood warning as Storm Bert batters the UK

The Environmental Agency has warned of flooding to roads and low lying land, as heavy rainfall is forecast this weekend.
Several weather warnings are in place, including two rare amber alerts, as the Met Office has issued concerns about travel disruption, power cuts and hazards presented by icy surfaces, especially in rural areas.

Snow is forecast as far south as the Welsh valleys, but the heaviest will be later in the morning across Cumbria and Lancashire. Elsewhere, the heaviest of the rain is expected across the Isle of Man, Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders.
In a statement on their website, the Environmental Agency said: "Flood alert for River Gowy catchment including areas around Frodsham
"Flooding of roads and low lying land is possible, property flooding is not expected. Flooding is possible from 5:00 PM on 22/11/2024 and will affect locations near the River Gowy.
"Further heavy rainfall is forecast, levels will continue to rise and remain high all weekend. Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses."
It is one of 14 flood alerts issued nationally. They include areas around Leek and Cheadle in Staffordshire, Todmorden and Hebden Bridge, areas in Scotland, Shropshire and the Lower River Calder catchment area.
