by · Manchester Evening News

Flood warnings and alerts remained in force across Greater Manchester on Sunday after Storm Bert brought heavy rain and driving winds to the region.

The Met Office said Storm Bert is likely to cause 'dangerous coastal conditions' and disruption across southern England and parts of Wales until 9pm on Sunday, with a yellow wind warning in place.

A yellow weather warning for Sunday is also in place across parts of south-east Wales and Herefordshire, which is active until 1pm.

The national weather service has warned some communities may be cut off by flooded roads, particularly in the west of England.

No weather warnings are in place for Greater Manchester on Sunday, but four flood alerts and one flood warning remain in force.

The warning is in place for Pearl Brook at Horwich, Bolton, an area close to the river from Bridge Street and Old Station Park to the M61 motorway.

The Environment Agency said: "Flood warning area: Horwich town centre from Bridge Street and Old Station Park to the M61, homes and businesses on Winter Hey Lane at the junction with Chorley New Road, Mason Street and adjoining roads including Back Emmett Street and Chorley New Road."

Water levels at Pearl Brook, however, are now receding after peaking at 1.38 metres on Saturday afternoon, a height triggering possible floods.

Flood alerts remain in force for the upper River Douglas in Wigan; the middle River Mersey catchment including areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston; the lower River Irwell catchment areas across Manchester and the upper River Irwell catchment area including Oldham, Bolton, Rochdale, Haslingden, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall.

Water levels, however, are said to be falling.

The welcome news of water levels receding comes after the River Irwell burst its banks in Ramsbottom, near Bury, on Saturday afternoon amid persistent rain, with flooding also reported in Edenfield and other areas nearby.

Bury council said it was 'dealing with numerous reports of localised flooding'.

Heavy and persistent rain is set to hit the south-west of England into Sunday, with a chance that some places over Dartmoor could see 100-150mm of rainfall, the Met Office said.

Nationally, a total of 61 flood warnings - meaning flooding is expected - were in place, together with 175 flood alerts.
