Seven hidden symptoms of high blood sugar that you can see on your face
Doctors have revealed that high blood sugar can cause visible symptoms on your face - here’s the seven symptoms that you should watch out for that may indicate an issue
by Beth Tanner · The MirrorDoctors have flagged the seven red-flags signs of high blood sugar on your face that you should never ignore.
Dr Eric Berg DC has revealed that there are certain signs of having high blood sugar that are important to keep an eye out for. He explains that your facial skin can reveal "a lot about what’s happening internally" in regards to your health. The healthy ketosis and intermittent fasting expert took to YouTube to share a video with his 12.6 million subscribers about the most common signs of the condition.
Dr Berg, who also wrote The Healthy Keto Plan, said: "Looking at a person's face can give you so many clues about what's going on inside.” He also explained that ‘high blood sugar, also known as hyperglycaemia, can be bad because it can lead to serious health complications if left untreated’.
Adding that, if untreated, it can lead to damage to the kidneys, nerves, eyes, blood vessels, and can even cause coronary heart disease. In addition, it can also trigger atherosclerosis which, according to Dr Berg is a "build up of fatty material in blood vessels that can narrow them and increase blood pressure".
The first of the seven signs is the actual shape of your face. Dr Berg explains that if you have a "round, puffy face" then you may have ‘too much insulin’. He adds that how your eyes look can also be an indicator of an issue with high blood sugar and explains that "bloodshot eyes" are a sign that there may be an underlying health issue.
Other symptoms include puffiness in the tissue around the eyes, which Dr Berg explains could suggest that ‘the kidneys are backed up’ due to fluid retention. He also adds that if you’ve got visible fat under the chin this is caused by a ‘spill-off of accumulated fat’, which could be linked to high blood sugar levels.
Dr Berg adds that skin texture is another factor to look out for. He explained that if skin is oily it could mean that the person has high androgens which is linked to high insulin levels. Dry, flakey skin is another sign that your health isn’t at its best and that your blood sugar levels may be elevated. The health expert reveals that the last symptom to keep an eye out for is acne. He explains: Acne can come from high androgens, which is really too much insulin.”
He adds that if you notice any of these symptoms on your face, it’s a good idea to visit your GP to get your blood sugar levels checked out. He explains that a doctor can perform a simple blood test to ensure that your blood sugar levels aren’t overly high.
