Unable to get through to a 999 operator, a devastated mum shouted "Why are they not answering the f**king phone?" as her baby, just days old, went into a 'prolonged period of cardiac arrest'. Born at John Radcliffe Hospital on September 27, 2022, Wyllow-Raine Swinburn was taken home on September 29 but went on to collapse the following morning of September 30.

It is reported that after Wyllow-Raine's mum, Amelia Pill, spent seven minutes waiting for an operator when calling 999, the newborn died. The family spent 40 minutes performing CPR on the three-day-old whilst waiting for paramedics at their home, Oxford Coroner's Court was told last year to allow for further evidence to be gathered, Senior Coroner Darren Salter adjourned the inquest at the time.

A pre-inquest review (PIR) into the death of Wyllow-Raine was held at Oxford Coroner's Court on Wednesday, October 2, according to the Sun. For the latest health and Covid news, sign up to our newsletter here

At 4.38am, the mother called an ambulance when Wyllow-Raine appeared to have stopped breathing. However, there was seven minutes between the emergency call being made and it being picked up by the ambulance service.

Amelia's brother was awoken by her yelling: "Why are they not answering the f**king phone?" Her mother, Anna Fisher ran upstairs to find her daughter crying: "No-one is coming, no-one is coming."

It wasn't until over 30 minutes later that an ambulance arrived at the home at 5:09am. The young baby was taken to John Radcliffe Hospital where she was tragically pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.

Paediatric pathologist Dr Darren Farrell determined her cause of death as sudden unexpected death in infancy, unexplained, due to the post-mortem revealed nothing abnormal. An internal investigation was launched by Oxford University NHS Foundation Trust following the death.

The overall outcome was "not likely to be influenced by the time taken to answer the 999 call and the arrival of the ambulance". The full inquest is due to resume on December 2-3, 2024.
