Mangaluru: St Sebastian Church, Bendur celebrates 'Health Workers' Day'

Mangaluru, Oct 4: The Youth Commission, Health Commission, Education Commission, and Labour Commission, organised a special event to celebrate "Health Workers' Day" at St Sebastian Church, Bendur on September 29. This event honoured medical professionals from the parish, including medical students, nurses, doctors, administrative staff, and frontline workers, with particular appreciation for their efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The celebration began with a thanksgiving mass, presided over by Fr Ajith B Menezes, administrator of Fr Muller Medical College, Mangaluru, and the chief guest for the event.

The formal programme followed in the platinum jubilee auditorium, skilfully anchored by Patsy Britto, the master of ceremony. Fr Arun Lobo led the prayer and bestowed blessings upon the attendees.

The event began with a welcome dance by Shane Priyanka D’Souza. Vinod D’Souza, vice-president of the Pastoral Parish Council, warmly welcomed all attendees, appreciating the contributions of healthcare workers.

Fr Ajith Menezes presenting a talk on moral ethics, emphasizing the ethical responsibilities and moral strength required of healthcare workers in their daily lives. The vicar, Fr Walter D'Souza, delivered a heartfelt message, acknowledging the unwavering commitment of the healthcare workers and their contributions to society. The highlight was a special song written by Fr Walter and performed by parish members, paying tribute to healthcare professionals.

During the event, two distinguished healthcare professionals were honoured for their exceptional contributions. Professor Dr Claude Victor Rasquinha was recognised for his outstanding dedication, compassion, and service in the medical field for 52 years. Additionally, Nurse Presilla Wilma D’Souza, who works at Fr Muller’s Medical College Hospital, was honoured for receiving the prestigious Florence Nightingale Award for her exemplary service in nursing.

Dr Christofer Pais and Agnes Roche shared their experiences, providing insight into the challenges faced by healthcare professionals during the pandemic.

A cultural performance by Dr Rohan Monis, Dr Sharon Rasquinha, and Acquin and team delighted the audience. Joswin Pinto, CAL president, conducted engaging games, and winners were awarded prizes. The evening concluded with a blessing of the meal by Fr Lawrence Cutinha, followed by a dinner prepared by parish members that was enjoyed by all.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Suzanne Rasquinha, expressing deep gratitude to all healthcare workers and contributors to the event’s success. The "Health Workers' Day" celebration at St Sebastian Church was a fitting tribute to the healthcare heroes of the parish. The event left a lasting impression, reminding everyone of the profound impact of healthcare workers, not only in times of crisis but in everyday life.
