Astronomical jump in cost of developing recreation lands at County Kildare site
by Paul O'Meara · Leinster LeaderThere has been a huge jump in the estimated cost of developing recreation lands in a County Kildare town.
Naas-based politician Bill Clear said the cost of developing community lands in Sallins - a project that has taken some years already - has risen from an initial estimate of €9 million to €17 million.
The independent councillor said the community park “which has been highly anticipated by local residents” is set to be a flagship project aimed at enhancing green spaces, recreational facilities and the “overall community wellbeing in Sallins.”
He said the increase is due to a combination of factors, including inflation in construction materials, expanded design plans, and unforeseen infrastructural challenges.
He added: "While the cost increase is considerable, it reflects the necessary investments required to deliver a high-quality, sustainable, and future-proofed community asset for the people of Sallins," he said.
The long-awaited project envisages state-of-the-art playgrounds, walking and cycling paths, multi-use sports pitches, and extensive green spaces all designed to promote a healthy and active lifestyle for residents of the town, he said.
Additionally, the park will feature eco-friendly elements, including sustainable water management systems and biodiversity areas to support local wildlife.
"This is a once-in-a-generation investment in our community that will yield returns for decades to come. It will not only improve the quality of life for current residents but will also attract future growth and development (to) Sallins."
He says Kildare County Council has applied for funding but the money is coming from a budget which is capped at €200m for the entire country - and this worries Cllr Clear because the Sallins project represents a sizeable portion of the total fund.
"We remain committed to delivering this transformative project within a reasonable budget while maintaining the high standards that Sallins deserves," he added.
It was announced almost six years ago that KCC had bought 48 acres of land which is bordered by the Grand Canal and is situated between Sallins and the River Liffey - with a total of 33 acres being made available for amenity use.
According to KCC a detail design for phase one is currently being prepared. This is to
develop the playing pitches, car park and entrances to the site. This design work should be complete by the end of 2024 which will allow KCC to tender for these works. KCC has also applied for money to part fund the development of the site. The outcome of this application is awaited.
