Octopus urges customers who have a boiler to act now for free £206

With the colder weather noticeably coming in this week, many UK households will be looking into how to heat their home working space without having to spend too much money. And thankfully, a tip - which is backed by Octopus Energy - is going viral.

TikTok content creator The Sterling Man (@thesterlingman) said: "This simple trick could reduce your gas bill. According to Octopus Energy, most people have the temperature settings on their boiler set too high. Octopus Energy recommend setting your hot water temperature down to 55.

"For the radiator temperature, Valen [Energy] recommends that this can go down to 60. However, Octopus Energy recommends this can go down as low as 50." Octopus says: "Set your boiler's 'flow temperature' between 55 and 60 degrees: your home will feel just as warm, but you could see real savings on your typical gas use.

"While there’s plenty of arguments over thermostats, few people ever change the settings on their boiler itself. The key one here is the flow temperature. This is the temperature the water leaves the boiler at to heat your home or provide hot water.

"At their default setting, these temperatures are usually too high. This doesn’t make your home warmer, but it can add massively to your bills and emissions. It’s like putting your foot flat to the floor when driving – it’s hugely wasteful but doesn’t really affect your journey time.

"If you have a combi boiler, we recommend setting your flow temperature to 50c for heating and 55c for hot water – it’ll take a little longer to heat up, but the gas and CO2 savings make it more than worthwhile!"

The Energy Saving Trust says: "Some people suggest that turning the radiator flow down to 60 degrees is reasonable. But you’ll have to find what works for you by trial and error. Bear in mind there’s a risk of the house getting too cold while you find the right temperature."

New research from the Salford Energy House found that lowering your heating flow temperature resulted in gas usage savings of: up to 9% by lowering the temperature from 80°C to 60°C. up to 12% by lowering the temperature from 80°C to 55°C.

12 per cent of the new price cap - £1717 - would be £206.
