Drivers could be 'banned from parking outside homes' in new rules under consideration
by Oscar Fisher, Richard Guttridge · Derbyshire LiveMotorists across the nation could soon find themselves unable to park outside their homes if new laws under Government consideration come to pass. The introduction of a widespread pavement parking ban is being eyed, potentially rolling out in the upcoming months, creating a headache for residents without driveways or those owning multiple vehicles.
With many having little choice but to park partially on pavements to avoid obstructing narrow roadways, these proposed rules could force drivers to search for alternative parking spots away from their residences. The debate over such regulations has lingered for years, yet no previous administration has committed to implementing them.
Now, it falls to Labour to determine whether to move forward with the ban. With enforcement touted as a considerable challenge, local councils might have to stretch their resources further to keep streets clear. Transport secretary Louise Haigh disclosed that the Government is "considering options" as they inch towards a conclusive stance.
Advocacy groups champion a national curb on pavement parking, arguing that it would enhance safety for the disabled, vulnerable pedestrians, and parents with children, noting that oversized modern vehicles often clog walkways, compelling pedestrians onto roads. Acknowledging concerns over accessibility, Ms Haigh recognised the importance of ensuring unobstructed pavements for all, reports Birmingham Live.
The additional pressure on local councils to enforce a possible new prohibition has not escaped the Government's notice. Ms Haigh remarked: "I completely recognise how important it is for accessibility.
"We're considering what options we have available, because we want to make sure that any measures are not burdensome on local authorities and are done in the most effective way." She added: "But I am really committed to responding to the consultation as quickly as possible."
