Education minister condemns killing of bus driver at Holmwood Technical

Minister of Education Dr Dana Morris-Dixon has expressed profound sadness at the tragic loss of  Rohan Gentles, the bus driver who was fatally attacked Friday morning while on duty at Holmwood Technical High School in Manchester.

"This senseless act of violence has no place in our society, especially within our educational institutions. We stand united with the Holmwood Technical family, and our teams are working assiduously to support the school community and law enforcement with their investigation into the matter," she said in a media release on Friday.

Morris-Dixon said her ministry will conduct a thorough review of the safety and security protocols at the school to identify any gaps and strengthen measures to safeguard the school community

She said the ministry has also mobilised its team, including the school's leadership, regional safety and security officer, education officer, guidance and counselling officers and social workers, to provide critical support to the students, staff, and other members of the school community.

In the meantime, she stated that the education ministry unequivocally condemns acts of crime and violence in all its forms, particularly those that threaten the safety and security of our students and the school environment.

"Schools must remain safe havens for learning, development, and growth, free from the shadow of violence," Morris-Dixon said.
