Did Lord Alli buy you those? Starmer shows off £200 designer trainers

Sir Keir Starmer showed off a pair of £200 designer trainers as he dressed down for a 'bromantic' beer with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau at the G20 summit in Brazil.

The two premiers enjoyed a cold one during a meeting on the sidelines of the gathering of world leaders in Rio de Janeiro.

Having swapped their suits for jeans and trainers, Sir Keir and Mr Trudeau appeared relaxed as they sat down for their talks.

There has been close scrutiny of Sir Keir's wardrobe since he became embroiled in a 'freebies' row after accepting thousands of pounds' worth of clothing from a donor.

Lord Waheed Alli, a Labour peer, donated £16,200 in 'work clothing' to the PM ahead of the general election, as well as 'multiple pairs of glasses' worth £2,485.

During his meeting with Mr Trudeau, Sir Keir seemed to be wearing a pair of Hugo Boss trainers that sell for £199 on the brand's website.

They are advertised as 'running-style trainers with eva-rubber outsole' and are adorned with 'signature-style webbing'.

It is not the first time the Labour leader has been spotted in a pair of Hugo Boss trainers, with Sir Keir having been pictured wearing a different pair in 2022.

The PM's meeting with Mr Trudeau came during a busy day of global diplomacy on the first day of the G20 summit.

Sir Keir also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Australian PM Anthony Albanese, Indian PM Narendra Modi, and Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba.

Following the PM's meeting with Mr Modi, Downing Street announced the Government is set to relaunch trade talks with India.

Sir Keir said: 'Boosting economic growth is key to improving living standards for working people.

'A new trade deal with India will support jobs and prosperity in the UK – and represent a step forward in our mission to deliver growth and opportunity across our country.'

Lord Alli's links to senior Labour MPs came under close scrutiny after the party's general election win in July.

He also donated £6,134 of clothing and 'personal support' to Sir Keir's wife Victoria, and gave 'work clothes' costing £3,550 to Deputy PM Angela Rayner.

He allowed Ms Rayner to stay in his plush New York flat while on holiday and even bankrolled a 40th birthday bash for Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson last year.

Sir Keir borrowed an £18million penthouse flat from Lord Alli during the general election campaign.

The PM said he took the offer so that his son would have a place to study for his GCSEs without having to walk past journalists outside their family home.

Lord Alli was given a sought-after Downing Street security pass shortly after the party's election win, despite seemingly not having a Government role.

His pass has since been handed back but Labour has continued to be dogged by a row over his donations, which has been dubbed as 'passes for glasses'.

In the wake of the controversy, the PM, Ms Rayner and Chancellor Rachel Reeves vowed to no longer accept donations of clothing.
